About
Fifty notes on BYOD as a commercial arrangement rather than as a technical configuration.
Who it is for
Whoever writes and runs the arrangement: operations, finance or HR, together with IT. Not the person administering the management platform — how that software works is a separate and substantial subject, and this is not it.
The position
An organisation running BYOD has transferred a capital purchase to its staff. The saving is visible and what was given up is not: control of the specification, the replacement cycle, the configuration, and the ability to end it cleanly.
Neither is what the employee gave: capital, wear, storage of somebody else's data, and the permanent presence of work in their pocket.
Almost everything that goes seriously wrong goes wrong at the exit, and almost all of it is prevented by two decisions made at the start.
What the core notes deliberately avoid
Product rankings inside the core notes. Named comparisons live in separate tool guides.
Figures for average savings, because those come from people selling the tooling.
Nothing here is legal or tax advice
Employment, tax and data protection rules differ substantially by jurisdiction and are moving. Everything here is orientation.
About this domain
This address previously belonged to a San Francisco non-profit that continues to operate elsewhere. There is a page about that.
